Mahasiswa terdiri dari dua penggalan kata, yaitu maha yang berarti tinggi, serta siswa yang berarti orang yang menuntut ilmu. Sedangkan definisi plagiarism adalah tindakan menjiplak atau mengutip dari karya ilmiah orang lain baik sebagian atau seluruh isinya tanpa disertai mencantumkan sumber (Penulis). Sehingga seolah-olah hasil karya tersebut sebagai hasil karya sendiri. Tindakan plagiarism merupakan tindak kriminal dalam ruang lingkup khasanah keilmuan ( dunia pendidikan).
Bila dilihat dari pengertian harfiah kata " mahasiswa " dengan realita akan budaya plagiarism di lingkungan masyarakat pada umumnya mahasiwa pada khususnya, Dapat disimpulkan bahwa telah terjadi paradigma yang tidak semestinya di lingkungan kampus.
Penulis menilai bahwa penyebab mahasiswa melakukan tindakan plagiarism, antara lain :
- Minimnya pengetahuan akan metode ilmiah dalam penulisan
- Budaya dalam mengerjakan tugas dengan "copy" dan "paste" (Malas).
- Kurangnya intelektualitas mahasiswa.
- Banyaknya referensi di internet, sehingga mahasiswa malas dalam mengolah nya.
- Tidak adanya sanksi hukum, kecuali sanksi keorisinilan tugas yang dibuat mahasiswa, kecuali pada saat pengujian skripsi.
Maka dari itu perlu adanya pendidikan dasar akan belajar ilmiah secara baik dan benar pada saat semester awal, sehingga diharapkan akan menghilangkan budaya plagiarism dan meningkatkan minat menulis.
